First Article Inspection (FAI) Explained
In industries like aerospace (AS9100) and automotive (IATF 16949), getting the first part right is everything. First Article Inspection (FAI) is the verification that your manufacturing process can reliably produce a part to specification.
What is an FAI?
It is a complete, independent, and documented physical and functional inspection process. It verifies that prescribed production methods have produced an acceptable item as specified by engineering drawings.
When is FAI Required?
- First production run of a new part.
- Change in design affecting fit, form, or function.
- Change in manufacturing source, process, inspection method, or location.
- Change in tooling or materials.
- Lapse in production for two years.
The AS9102 Standard
For aerospace, FAI is governed by AS9102. It requires three forms:
- Form 1: Part Number Accountability.
- Form 2: Product Accountability (Materials, Processes).
- Form 3: Characteristic Accountability (Dimensions, Tolerances).
FAI is your proof of process capability. Conduct it rigorously.
